NGA Fibre Rollout extended to 1.4 million premises
(Friday, 29th November 2013) eir today announced an increase to its planned national fibre footprint from 1.2 million homes and businesses to 1.4 million homes and businesses across Ireland.
Today’s announcement means that an additional 562 communities across Ireland will be able to avail of fibre broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps, from a range of Service Providers.
Commenting on the announcement Carolan Lennon, MD open eir said “This is a major extension of our open access fibre network to a large number of provincial towns. Service Providers will be able to offer fibre broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps to 70% of all homes and businesses in Ireland by July 2016. We are maximising the footprint of fibre broadband that can be currently achieved on a commercial basis in Ireland, and are committed to working with the Government to ensure that the National Broadband Plan provides open access high speed broadband for all.”
eir’s fibre rollout programme is currently ahead of schedule and the company is on track to pass 700,000 premises with fibre by the end of the year.
